It's true that marijuana is bad for you at any age, however the whole article fails to mention the effects of people who have been around marijuana users. If other people (Especially teens 17-) breathe in the second-hand smoke, then wouldn't that have an adverse effect on their IQ scores as well? Also, as stated in the article, an IQ test is "too rigid and limited." IQ tests are tailored on a certain set of subject, so there are always those people who won't perform well on them. Besides, they tested this on people who are known to be addicted to marijuana or have been. The loss in IQ points could have been only as a result that they couldn't stop thinking about how to get more, instead of being concerned with things that almost any down to earth person normally would. Also, IQ tests can be biased, so if someone scores low on a certain type of IQ test, then that generally wouldn't mean that they were or were becoming less intelligent, but rather they might not have the knowledge needed to score well on that kind of test. They'd have to take several different IQ tests to see whether or not the study would be accurate.

I think its worse than cigarettes, because not only does it damage brain cells but it will permanently decrease your IQ score.

Honestly, i have a couple of friends that smokes marijuana pretty frequently and you can clearly tell that their IQ has dropped significantly but im going to be honest they weren't very smart to begin with.

I think marijuana is worse than cigarettes, because it kills brain cells. Though marijuana isn't addictive and people spend way more money on marijuana than cigarettes. People think they aren't negatively effected by marijuana so they smoke more and more. This is a good article that more and more people should know about.

I agree with Mikael in the sense that the study isn't really accurate. I believe this mainly due to the fact that several other factors can come into play as well. Not every individual is the same, and each one lives different lives. Who's to say that all the participants in the study hadn't experienced some type of trauma or health issue during their teen years that could have also played a role in their brain development? Variables such as these would have been needed to be accounted for in order to provide us with an accurate study.

I think smoking marijuana is worse than smoking cigarettes because, it damages the brain. It doesn't just damage it, it reduces the IQ of the person involved. Like the therapist said, smoking marijuana is bad no matter your age. He also said that the smoker is unaware of his problem while he/she is involved, which makes issues even worse; if a person is unaware of a problem how can he/she fix it.

We all know that marijuana is bad for you, yet young adults believe that it is not as bad cigarettes. This article helps marijuana smokers see that getting high is actually a waste of time because it kills a persons IQ, and you can never get those back.Studies in this article have shown that if you stop now you will be helping yourself in the long run.

I think the use of marijuana has no effect on the intelligence of the individual. No matter how much marijuana you ingest, i think if you keep your head in your books study hard, focus, and pay attention in all your classes intelligence is inevitable.

I have grown up around marijuana users, and of course there will always be an exception to the article. Some people I can understand the IQ drop, I do know people who aren't so bright, most likely because of the heavy marijuana use. However, I do know marijuana users who are very intelligent, who can hold very intelligent conversations as well.

Marijuana has inverse effects on the users. Especially younger users. While the brain is still developing, it will be effected by and substance it is exposed to. From my expirence each person has different reactions to the drug. Many will show signs of use and IQ drop. But others won't. Many people only focus on how marijuana has little to no physical side-effects but overlook the more serious mental side-effects.

I believe that marijuana does have a negative impact on the brain due to the toxins in the drug but i am not so convinced that it drops your IQ yet because i have a lot of friends that smoke weed and are still very smart and intelligent.

I honestly believe smoking anything is bad but I believe smoking cigarettes are worse because they can cause cancer which will kill you faster and if weed has been used to help people then just like any drug if you become addicted then there will seriously be some side effects which could ultimately lead to death

I agree that marijauna and cigerettes are both bad for you and the people who smoke marijauna and claim that ciggeretes are nasty and bad for you they should read this article to learn how badly marijauna affects your brain and your body. All smokeing is bad and i beleive can be addicting or causes by peer pressure, you shouldn't do it.

Any type of smoking is bad but marijuana use may or may not decrease IQ. I believe it depends on the intake and how many times you do it . Some people have the occasional cigarette and some smoke marijuana occasionally .

Marijuana kills brain cells. Of course, it'll knock down a couple of IQ points! This isn't news for me.

I believe all smoking is bad, but I still believe cigarettes are worse than marijuana. Yes I understand that marijuana kills brain cells and will drop your IQ points, but that doesn't equate to dying. Cigarettes cause cancer and deterioration of the lungs. Cigarettes can kill, and marijuana can make you dumber. I'd rather be dumb than dead.

Honestly, unless pure oxygen is being pumped into your lungs, the state of your respiratory health is being altered. Smoking, a recreational activity that dates back centuries, is a truly strange concept. Some of the worst poisons found in the air are found in cigarettes, and billions partake in the life-shortening, lung-numbing pastime. So, whether it be marijuana or cigarettes, both have negative effects and I would not personally condone the use of either. In the event where I would have to choose between the two, I would pick marijuana because the effects (compared to cigarettes) would at least slow my ride to the reaper by years that I could not otherwise keep through habitual cigarette use.

Ive always have been told that cigarettes are worse then marijuana. Marijuana causes your brain cells to drop, but would you rather have that or death because cigarettes causes death and not only death to the person that is smoking them, but to the people around them by second hand smoke.

Marijuana, if used for the right reasons, can be beneficial for ones health. People like to highlight all the wrong things about marijuana, but what about all the auspicious effects of it? Everything in life has adverse effects so why are we just highlighting the ill-effects of marijuana? Marijuana does treat symptoms that are caused by a wide range of illnesses.

Honestly, both smoking cigarettes and marijuana are equally dangerous. Both contain chemicals that are being inhaled that can harm your health. Yes, marijuana can be proven beneficial when it comes to the case of someone who is in dire need of the chemicals within the substance ( i.e. medicinal marijuana ) marijuana is still, if not equal, harmful to one's body just as much as cigarettes.

a dirty, filthy, puffing machine. That's right my friends, I smoked them nasty cigarettes. The stupidest habit known to man. They do nothing for you and screw up the air that surrounds you, and oh, by the way, anyone that's around you also must breath your poison.
