In a world of caffeine and super energy drinks, how do we even know what is "normal" anymore?

I think this article was extremely informative, to where anyone could understand it. It is certainly a topic that everyone should look into. Sleep IS very important. And keeping a proper sleep regimen is something that we all take lightly, but affects us in every way. I will most likely be trying to sleep early.

I think that our society really need to understand out important sleep actually is. Even my mom says that I only need around 6 hours of sleep! Then the people who do get enough sleep are considered lazy when in reality it's those who don't get enough sleep who will be less efficient. I wonder, even for myself, how much better I would do in school or at work if I got 8 hours of sleep every night.

First, I have state that this article was pretty long and it did not surprise me in the least. The sad truth is the more “busy” society becomes the less time we have to focus on our health – including sleep regiment. I believe we know what normal is, it's just that we doze off more than usual. It is important to note that we still need to get as much sleep as possible. Interesting enough, a new role in sleeping has been discovered. It was recently discovered that the space between brain cells increase during sleep; this extra space allows the brain to “flush” out toxins that build up during waking hours.

Honestly speaking, I think I get enough sleep. I go to bed at around 11 and wake up at 6:30. I don't get the required amount of sleep simply because school is completely unhealthy. But soon, I'll be faced with adult responsibilities and the hours of sleep I maintain will dwindle. I hope it won't be so difficult to put my foot down and actually demand days off so that I can rejuvenate. Sleep is for the weak? No, sleep is for the healthy.

While sleep is one of the world's main necessities, I believe it only holds us back. Sure it's great and all but in a theoretical place where humans don't need sleep to survive, I envision an existence that is far beyond the one we live in now. Our founding fathers would have already invented computers, and cartoonish dreams like the Jetsons would be today's reality. In very seldom cases do I see myself succumbing to the merciful embrace of slumber; I really do not plan to wholeheartedly accept it in my days to come either. At best, I believe that naps can optimize productivity as they fulfill the body's biological needs while lengthening the average time span a person has to complete the tasks at hand. I think that sleep is simply a hindrance to great accomplishment-one step beyond sleep is laziness, the ultimate accomplice of failure itself.

I felt like this article was explaining how society focuses more on completing their work than getting sleep. Sleep is the most important thing that we need in order to survive. I get about 5-9 sleep a day depending on if I had practice or how much homework I have. Sometimes I let my sleep come before my work and I tend to regret my decision due to the fact that I'm spending the next night making up the work I missed. I do agree with Blossom that when we become adults that things become a lot easier to use but in reality it doesn't because I see how my mom struggle to even try to get sleep.

As I read through this article, it does make sense that people need at least 8 hours of sleep, but at the same time, it does not free us from what we do in our everyday lives. When you're working whether at a job or school, you always have deadlines to meet, and it becomes very difficult to every find relaxing time. So, some people decide to get extra rest on the weekend. I also do this during my weekend, and it helps me recover the sleep I lost. My only issue is that people don't take the time to think about what doctors, professors, and even students have to go through to get sleep.

Sleep is a necessity and everybody needs sleep. Sleep deprivation is bad and everybody needs to get a good amount of sleep. However, I understand why people lose sleep. Things have to get done. Life is a competition and people love to win. One way to get ahead of your competition is to work while they are sleeping. Yes this loses ours of sleep, but sometimes to get where you have to go you have to have sacrifices and sleep could be one of them. I understand that sleep is a necessity but you have to do what you have to do to get where you want to be.

This was very informative. My mom always says that I sleep too much when in reality I get enough sleep to keep me going throughout the day. When other kids are putting their head down in class they're missing information because they're sleep deprived. I dont have that problem. Sleep is one of the best medicines

sleep plays one of the most important roles in living. Like Mr. Mora says "in order to live all you need is sleep and food". Most people take sleep for granted. I cherish every second when I'm in my delta waves. That's why people are so tired during the day because they don't sleep at night. Then the circadian rhythm is really thrown when they drink coffee and stuff to keep them awake during the DAY.

I completely agree with this whole article. Sleep honestly does play a big role in everybody's life especially in mine. I know for a fact that I rarely get a full 8 hours of sleep and it really does change my personality and how I am feeling when I don't get enough rest. I feel tired and drained all the time and usually I'll be in a grumpy mood. but as soon as the weekend comes I'm literally in bed all day. But before i actually appreciated sleep i always thought that it was never important as if I could run on 2 hours of sleep, but as the older I got I really do see how sleep is really is one of the biggest necessities you need

The true issue is that, as a society, we do not recognize the importance of sleep. The entire world is on a "you can sleep when its done" attitude, and it is the hardest decision to make as a student. Do you get your work done, or do you get rest so that the work you produce actually has quality? Over the years it seems that the amount of work demanded increased and the amount of time to do it in decreased. After reading this article, I have decided to try to find more time to sleep. Taking an hour in the evening to watch a television show would probably be better spent by actually getting rest. I have personally seen the quality of my work decrease with the decreased amount of sleep I'm getting, but it is an extremely hard decision to make, as there are certainly never enough hours in a day.

I feel like no one gets the amount of sleep that they need. We all suffer from sleep deprivation for mulitple reasons. People mostly find being successful is more important than getting the correct amount of sleep that they need. I know i do not recieve enough sleep that I need because I want to stay up late on the phone or stay up doing my homework. It's not good because it effects my quality in school and the workplace. It also effects peoples moods and all.

I found this to be far from surprising. The way that we try to spread ourselves too thin by being involved with so much doesn't really give us the chance to get the sleep we need. To make things worse, we then drink caffeine filled drinks to convince ourselves that we are awake. In the end, this is just going to damage our bodies even further. As everyone says, "You need at least 8 ours of sleep." And more than likely we need more than that. I think that we as people in a world where alertness can be so essential, need to move sleep up on our list of priorities.

I'll have a Nonfat Organic Chocolate Brownie Frappuccino Extra Hot with Foam and Whipped Cream that's Double Blended. This is the society that we live in today. More work with less sleep supplemented with high amounts of caffeine. Why don't we sleep more? Simply put, we can't. We're always on the go neglecting what our body actually needs to function. Should I do this or get some sleep is never a question in ones mind. The question is, rather, should I do this or that.10 hours of sleep, you wish. 9 hours of sleep, not really. 8 hours of sleep, maybe on weekends. 4 hours of sleep, that's more like it. Sleep should be a priority of ours rather than an action that is done if time permits. Besides you get more done when you're well rested, but how would you know that? It's not like you've gotten enough sleep to know how that feels.

I am a firm advocate of sleep. I make sure that every day i get my work done early so that i am able to get about eight to nine hours a sleep daily. Many people say they can function on five hours and as they progress through the day and things start to settle down their body does as well. they start to knob off showing that they aren't paying to the teacher. This is a normal student that only has their future on the line, imagine a truck driver who is drifting in and out of traffic slinging about two tons of weight around on a trailer. Instead of yourself you are possibly putting other on the line when your tired. I believe that all people should be required to somehow get at least six to seven hours hours of continues undisturbed sleep a night.

It's no surprise that many people today are sleep deprived, especially when you consider the extraordinary technology of our times, that sadly keeps us up later than we ever could in past centuries. It's incredible, yes, but also very damaging. It's incredible to see how our body truly NEEDS sleep. Our body will take it, whether it's at an inconvenience to you or the people around you. What I found most shocking was that sleep deprivation can cause cancer! I have never heard of such a thing. This correlation should be publicized more, especially if so many people are at risk.

This article preaches the truth. Is there anybody that truly gets the right amount of sleep everyday and finishes everything they need to do? We live in a society where this is virtually impossible especially with all the activities we have planned day to day. I wish I could go back to the times when my mother would force me to take a nap...oh how I miss those days. Trying to stay awake with coffee and other supplements always works in the beginning, but soon wears off or gives negative effects. I know I am one of many people whose circadian rhythm is all jacked up because of sleep deprivation This especially scares me when I hear about all the diseases that occur due to a lack of sleep. Could this be why more diseases are present in today's society than ever before? Is it because all we need to do is sleep?
